MPC Trustee, Area 4 / Monterey Peninsula College District
Experienced, Ethical, Ready to Serve
I am a naturalized American citizen born in Nicaragua. I came to the U.S. because of a scholarship offered to me by the University of Findlay in Ohio, where I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. I later completed a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Bowling Green State University. For nearly 25 years I moved through the ranks in California Community Colleges from Teacher to Director, Dean, Vice President and President. I have held residency in Monterey County for 24 years, coming to this area when Hartnell College offered me the position of Vice-President, Student Services. I later served as President at Chabot College in Hayward. Through this professional experience I have acquired knowledge on all aspects of community college operations from instruction to upper management. I am a very able public speaker. Locally I am member of the PG Rotary Club, an ambassador for the PG Chamber of Commerce and Board of Director member of the Blind and Visually Impaired Center in PG and Palenke Arts in Seaside, which shows my commitment to serve my community. I have dedicated my life to serving those with the highest barriers to obtaining a college education.
I believe that an educated citizenry is necessary to maintain our democracy and to support the economic stability of our community. That is why I support policies that: 1) foster effective access to a community college education for those interested in technical skills or wishing to transfer to four year colleges or universities. 2) attract and retain the best qualified, diverse faculty, staff and administration - one that reflects the diversity of the student body, by offering competitive salaries and benefits and fostering a climate of creativity and innovation. 3) In our current environment we have found that the teaching and learning function must be provided with appropriate technologies, therefore, I will support or initiate policies that promote educational access through remote learning. In every post I have held, I have had as my priority to offer effective, innovative and current continued learning opportunities. You can learn more about me at celiabarberena.com
I am prepared for the job; fair in all my dealings; devoted to a life of service.
