My History

As a three-term Salinas City Councilman, I have led regional efforts to protect and grow the local economy safely. This is essential under COVID-19. I have a proven track record of getting things done on important and complex issues including homelessness, housing and community safety.

I am a small business owner & partner in two businesses including McShane's Landscape Supply on Hwy. 68 and an organic fertilizer company, Converted Organics. I have a reputation for being positive, energetic and results driven.

Under my leadership, hundreds of affordable homes have been built in Salinas, with many more on the way. Salinas is experiencing an 80% decrease in crime in five years thanks to programs I’ve supported including community oriented policing, governing for racial equity and greater diversity and training in our police force.

I have more than (20) years experience in public appointed and elected office.
I have sponsored important legislation addressing blight, homelessness, public art, urban greening (tree planting), housing and downtown revitalization.

I am also proud to have founded and led important community events such as the Salinas Valley Food & Wine Festival, Monterey County Ag Tech Summit and an annual Holiday Home Lighting Competition.

I love community and am an accessible, enthusiastic and hands on politician that is ready to get to work on tough regional issues.

My Plans

As your Monterey County Supervisor, I will protect the beauty and restore the prosperity of our community by aggressively pursuing a full & safe COVID-19 recovery (from the virus and from the economic devastation), implementing compassionate and effective means to end homelessness, fighting for more affordable housing to keep people in their communities, and guaranteeing excellence in early childhood education and effectiveness of distance learning.

We live in one of the most beautiful and diverse places in the country. But it is the wonderful people who live and work here in Monterey County that truly make this such a special place. I pride myself on working with diverse groups of people that have a history of disagreeing with each other.

Why Vote For Me?

When I was in grade school, I never picked a fight. But my parents taught me to stand up for myself — never back down from a bully and stand my ground.

Whether it be from Monterey Downs or Whispering Oaks, fracking or drilling, there are always outsiders who want to exploit our community for their own purposes in a get-rich-quick scheme. And we simply cannot ignore the harm the Coronavirus wants to inflict on our community. Not on my watch.

Monterey County needs someone to stand up to these bullies.

I asked the tough questions about the Cal Am desalination plant, I oppose fracking, I will fight every attempt to drill for oil off of our shoreline, and I will do everything in my power to protect us from further devastation from the pandemic.
